The solar powered generator provided by Donald Najdek, of Ecobuild. | Salisbury Bank will soon be starting work on a new branch office in Millerton NY. Even better, the previous building that stood on the site will live on - the demolished materials will be recycled and put to use in other structures.
To ensure that the demolition is as environmentally positive as possible, Salisbury Bank hired the experts: Dutchess County Wood Salvage and Demolition from Pine Plains, NY, which is certified for Hazardous Material clean-up.
According to Travis Jameson, the company's owner (who was subcontracted by Salisbury Bank customer Doug Weaver, owner of Superior Sanitation), "The demolition crew utilized a solar-powered generator provided by Donald Najdek of Ecobuild, to power tools. Our crew manually separated materials for reuse and recycling. We expect to recycle or salvage 90% of the material from the demolished building, including metal scrap, roof rafters, 2 x 12 boards and plywood sheets from the roof. Even cinder blocks will be reused if they are in good shape, or ground up if they're not."
Glass windows were removed and recycled by Recycle Depot, a LEED certified facility. Most of the reusable wood was sent to Antique and Vintage Woods in Pine Plains. Jameson observes that only five dumpsters of recyclable material were sent to Recycle Depot rather than the 15 there would have been if they didn't painstakingly salvage the wood. Dutchess County Demolition and Salvage also removed the dead trees from the site.
In addition, Salisbury Bank donated two gas heaters to Housatonic Valley Regional High School for a renovation project to create a new Science and Technology center, and sold two coolers that will be used in other businesses.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John F. Perotti commented, "Of course it takes extra effort to find buyers or organizations that can use parts of the infrastructure, and this type of demolition is more costly because of the amount of handwork involved. But as a corporate citizen committed to environmental stewardship, we feel we owe it to our community."
Demolition and clean-up has been completed, and the Bank expects to begin construction on the new branch later this spring with a planned opening in the fourth quarter of 2009.
