SALISBURY TRUST REWARDS EQUINE SPORTSMANSHIP Lynne Flanagan and her horse Dora earn first annual Sportsmanship Award
Lakeville, CT - November, 1, 2011

Rick Cantele congratulates Dora and Lynne Flanagan

Early this year, Salisbury Trust Wealth Advisory Services, a division of Salisbury Bank, opened up an opportunity to the Eventing community in the region to participate in the Salisbury Trust Sportsmanship Award. The Award offered to pay entry fees to four horse and rider pairs to compete at local USEA recognized events: Riga Meadow Horse Trials in July, Town Hill Horse Trials in September and Kent School Horse Trials in October.

The contest was open to horse and rider pairs of all ages and skill levels, and applications came in from riders in the tri-state area as well as Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. The large and deserving field was narrowed in July to Edith Taylor from Underhill, VT and her horse “Trixie”; Dr. Katherine Kane from Kent, CT and her horse “May”; Nancy Cerniglia from Craryville, NY and her horse “Yogi”; and Lynne Flanagan from Sharon, CT and her horse “Dora”. Each participant’s scores were tallied throughout the sponsored events and the horse and rider with the lowest average score won the Salisbury Trust Sportsmanship Award.

Today, Salisbury Trust announced the winners: Lynn Flanagan and her 10-year-old Thoroughbred mare, Dora. Lynne and Dora, a former racehorse that Lynn retrained herself, have only been eventing for two years. This was their first year competing at the Novice level, and they earned a total average score of 36.1 to earn the top prize.

Meredith Tiedemann, Vice President and Trust Officer, says, “The applicants for the Salisbury Trust Sportsmanship Award were asked what ‘sportsmanship’ means to them. Lynne’s response was ‘sportsmanship means being able to feel good about yourself, your horse, and what you have accomplished together.’ They both should be feeling successful about this year!”
